Celebrate Life’s Milestones

Life has many milestones.  Some are personal, while others we share with our families and friends.  No matter which type of milestone you’ve accomplished, it’s very important to celebrate them.

Some milestones we achieve at a very young age.  These include things like our first steps and first word.  Thankfully, our parents almost always record these early milestones so we can look back on them later.

Learning to drive at sixteen is a large milestone for many people.  This rite of passage is one of the biggest signs of becoming an adult.  Registering to vote and then turning 21 are the other two major milestones that show a person is now ready to carry the responsibilities associated with adulthood.

Graduation is another of life’s milestones.  Some schools have a number of different graduations: kindergarten, middle school, and high school.  Then there’s college graduation, and some people go into higher education programs and graduate again.  Graduations, especially high school and college, mark the ending of one chapter of our lives and the beginning of another.

The next milestone for many is to get married.  For some, women especially, their wedding is a huge event that they have been preparing for their entire life.  The dress, the cake, the decorations, the flowers…months are spent on ever little detail.  This achievement is shared with the entire family and many friends.  Of course, some people reach this milestone earlier in life than others, but that doesn’t really matter.  What matters is celebrating your commitment to someone you love.  Some people even choose not to get married but still celebrate the achievement of finding a lifelong companion in various ways.

Another major milestone for some people is having children.  The birth of a child, especially the first child, is a major life-changing event.  Your life will truly never be the same after having your first child.  While this milestone is celebrated at first with a baby shower, gifts, and flowers at the hospital, in a way you’ll celebrate it for the rest of your life.

Celebrating your anniversary, especially the first, tenth, twenty-fifth, and fiftieth, is a great milestone in your life.  Give your spouse a gift, go out to dinner, or spend the day doing something special for just the two of you.

There are many other personal milestones you might want to celebrate—getting a new job, getting a promotion, fulfilling one of your life-long goals—be sure to celebrate them in style.  Don’t let even the smallest milestone go by without at least acknowledging it in some way.

Make the Most of the Good Times

One thing that’s true about everyone’s life is that things rarely are all good or all bad.  However, sometimes it seems like everything has gone horrible.  While those times do happen, sometimes the pendulum swings the other way, and it all seems to be going your way.  Be sure to make the most of these good times because, unfortunately, it seems like they never last forever.

How do you make the most of them?  Well, that really depends on how you enjoy celebrating and having fun.  If you’ve been wanting to buy some new electronics, a new car, or some other big ticket purchase, why not do it when it’s all going well?  There’s no better time to pamper yourself a bit than when it’s all good.

Another way of celebrating these good times is to take a moment and let your entire life slow down.  If you don’t have to stress over your job, your family, or anything else, take your time to relax.  Spend a lazy weekend afternoon doing nothing, or go out and see that movie you’ve wanted to see.  Take the time to de-stress and make your life less hectic.  Make the most out of this time by doing the things you want to do.

Also make the most of the good times by getting your life in order.  Now that you’ve got some time to breathe and relax, look at those tasks that have constantly been put off because of other, more pressing things.  Maybe you need to do some house repairs.  Perhaps you’ve been ignoring your gym membership and need to become a bit healthier.  During the good times, you may be able to take the time to work on these things.

Finally, when things are going good, take a minute and prepare for the bad times.  If possible, set aside a bit of money, or work on an emergency contact list in case something horrible happens.  By doing just a bit of preparation when things are going well, you’ll be able to better handle those times when things aren’t quite as good.
